And I ain’t talkin’ ’bout no yarn. There’s no knitting content whatsoever in this post, as a matter of fact. OK, a little at the end.

It’s not often that a speaker at a White House sponsored event gives you tingles. Tingles of glee, of fear, of sweeping sadness at the state of our union, of nervous laughter, but most of all, tingles of “Oh no, he did not‚ just say that! Ohhhh SNAP!”

Stephen Colbert gave a speech at the White House Correspondents Dinner last night. It appears that since he left both the president and the big-business press corps laying over an open flame on razor sharp kebob skewers – of comedy, you won’t hear much about it from regular news outlets. Do yourself a huge favor, watch it. I’ve never seen such nerve. I would most certainly have gone into full-on Jan Brady mode and‚ run out of there crying, my hair swinging awkwardy behind me. But I’m sure he didn’t expect to leave there in good graces, so he made the most of what was a rather surprising invitation to speak. If you don’t watch his show on Comedy Central, Colbert used to be on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He now has his own fake news show where his character is based on Bill O’Reilly. He obviously hates Bill O’Reilly. A lot.

Here is the story from the Daily Kos‚ where I originally found the link to the video. I’m linking it because the commentary for the post is really interesting. If you don’t feel like downloading the video (but really, you must to get the full effect), you can read a transcript here.‚ If you just want the link to the video, you can find it here at Democratic Underground.‚ It’s chopped up into two pieces to make the download quicker.

Go ahead, watch it, I’ll wait . . .

~whistles tunelessly while everyone squinches uncomfortably in their seats as they watch a man in a suit‚ tell GW what a huge disaster he is – to his face. Not to mention calling out the spinelessness of White House Press Correspondents.~

Now tell me, is there even enough yarn in the world to make this man a Wille Warmer? I think not. I Heart Stephen Colbert. Couldn’t you just picture a big vaudillian hook coming slowly into frame and yanking him out? It’s going to be a shame when he unexpectedly “retires to a remote village in Cuba” in the next couple of weeks.

Mayor Nagin, welcome to Washington D.C., the chocolate city with the marshmellow center and a graham cracker crust of corruption. It’s a mallomar… I guess what I’m describing is a mallomar- It’s a seasonal cookie!

As a native washingtonian attending college in New Orleans that was absolutely my favorite part and made his speech well worth distracting me from finals.

hilarious, hysterical, ironical maximus! my husband and I were watching it and looking at each other and saying, “did he just say that?” it was righteous tv watching thats for sure. best thing on tv in years! i know i havent caught any of clips because obviously they didnt know what they were getting when they hired stephen. great!!!!

I saw it this morning and was stunned. Husband and I kept turning to each other and saying, “OMG, did he just *say* that?” Truly, he spared no one. So sad that there were such easy pickings for his piece – the current administration has been such an embarrassment. Too bad about the deadpan audience reaction, were they afraid to be seen laughing/agreeing with Colbert in front of the Pres?

  5. Erin says:

Wow, you could even tell how uncomfortable the audience was! I think the man has some serious guts. What an awesome speech!

  6. kelly says:

oooh….glad i logged in. there was NO mention of this on any of the news outlets. can’t wait to see it! (rubs hands together with glee) yay for stitchy!

  7. Amy says:

I lovelovelove Stephen Colbert. I didn’t think anyone could be better than Jon Stewart, but I think Colbert has reached that exalted position. Best line: “He believes on Wednesday exactly what he believed on Monday, no matter what happened on Tuesday.” SCORE!

  8. Caryn says:

The DH and I are huge Daily Show/Colbert Report geeks, and haven’t missed an episode of either (thank you Tivo). We made plans on Sat. night to be back home to watch CSPAN to see Stephen’s speech, and were not dissappointed. (How lame are we? “YAY, I like to warch CSPAN on Saturday nights!”) He should win best quote of the year for the whole “deck chairs on the Hindenberg” think…very subtle!

  9. Agnes says:

My husband found the video clips last night and we watched them. That’s what we thought too … this man got to have balls to say that!

  10. Marnie says:

*sigh* I love Colbert too. My tivo spends a lot of time recording him :)

  11. Heather says:

Yes, it was majesterial. He was fearless and relentless, it was SO GRATIFYING! Don’t you love how the mainstream media instead chose to focus on ‘what a great sense of humor Bush has that he can poke fun at himself’? Gag–this was the REAL story!

  12. biglug says:

I watched the video of this online and I was so shocked and awed. I heart Colbert. He is amazing!

Thank you so much for the link…we hadn’t heard about it and it is so fabulous that words can not describe. When I told my husband that I learned about it from Stitchy Mcyarnpants, he was a little scornful…I mean, a knitting blog…but just yesterday he was repeating your line about Colbert retiring to a remote village in Cuba and said, “who said that?” “well, my dear, it was Stitchy Mcyarnpants.” Yes, he has been dining out on you for the past two days!

  14. Patti says:

I guess it says something about this administration that I was actually feeling afraid for him as I watched. What a brave brave, incredibly sexy man.

  15. stephievs says:

Who loves Stephen? I do! I miss the days when he and Steve Carrell used to do their debates on the daily show, but to have two whole shows to watch them on is intensly gratifying. I had to watch his speech through the crack in my fingers while covering my eyes. I’m glad somebody had balls at that dinner!

  16. steph says:

Yeah, I had to turn fast forward it because I was a bit worried for his life. You can actually see the prez start to process what he’s saying and see his expression just change throughout the evening. It’s fantastic. Utterly brilliant.

  17. jennifer says:

I watched it. I was awed. And I totally agree. The man has balls of brass.
